Danzan Ryu History

Danzan Ryu is a system of jujitsu, that was created by Henry Seishiro Okazaki. Okazaki was born in Japan, in 1890. He and his family immigrated to Hawaii. He was then diagnosed with an incurable form of tuberculosis. He was given just a few months to live. In those few months, he decided to study jujitsu.

Okazaki began to study Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu under Master Yoshimatsu Tanaka. Okazaki outlived the few months he was given to live. In fact, when he went back to the doctor, they could find no trace of the tuberculosis. Okazaki credited his recovery, to his study of jujitsu, and dedicated his life to the study of Jujitsu.

Okazaki's study of jujitsu led him to study many different styles of martial arts, from many different instructors. On a trip to Japan, Okazaki studied Namba-Shoshin Ryu, Iwaga Ryu, and Kosogabe Ryu jujitsu. He also got to study Judo under Jigoro Kano. In addition, to jujitsu and judo, Okazaki studied Okinawan Karate, Chinese Kung Fu, Hawaiian Lua, Filipino Knife fighting and the western arts of boxing and wrestling.

From all the arts he studied, Okazaki created his own system of jujitsu. It combined what he learned from the different arts that he had learned over the years.

Sensei William Bohan

Sensei William Bohan holds a Shodan in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, through the American Judo and Jujitsu Federation. He began studying Danzan Ryu in 1996, while attending California State University, Chico. He studied under Sensei Dan Simard, achieving the rank of Gokyu, blue belt, while there.

Upon graduating from Chico State, Sensei moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. There he continued his study of Danzan Ryu under Sensei Jeff Penner, at the Honshin Kan dojo, in Santa Rosa. In 2006, he was awarded the rank of Shodan. While Studying at Honshin Kan, he assisted instructing the juniors class, ages 7 - 12. He was also an assistant instructor for the adult classes.

Sensei then changed jobs, and moved across the country to Orlando, Florida. After finding no AJJF schools in Orlando, and very little Danzan Ryu, in Orlando, he has started his own school, Florida Danzan Ryu. This is an Allied School with the AJJF.
